The Coahuiltecans were nomadic hunter-gatherers who lived near rivers and streams in what is now called texas. Their diet consisted of plants, nuts, berries, fish, reptiles, rabbits, birds, javelinas, bison, and deer. In the summer they ate prickly pear. Pecans were an important protein source, mesquite tree bean pods were ground in a metate to produce flour. They cooked the bulbs and root crowns of the maguey, sotol and lechuguilla in pits.

Coahuiltecans were highly mobile. They lived in circular huts made from a wooden framework and covered with animal skins. Their hunting weapons were bow and arrows, throwing sticks and spears for fishing. They decorated their bodies with broad, straight, or wavy lines that ran the length of their torso. They spoke several languages, including Comecrudo and Cotoname. They came together for all-night dances called mitotes. During these occasions, they took peyote as a sacrament.
